Hey, guys!
As promised, I have another review for you this week. I'm going to talk about "The Coldest Girl In Coldtown", by Holly Black. Also, for the first time in my (blogging) life, I'm going to try keeping it spoiler-free, so that all my readers can enjoy a nice review without being in danger of having their reading experience ruined. Without further ado (yay, cliche), let'se get into it.
This book has exceeded any expectations I might have had before reading it. To be frank, I was actually very excited about it, and when my best friend gave it to me for (late) Christmas (THANK YOU, ANKA), I was really happy and eager to get into it. However, I couldn't forget the fact that this IS a vampire book and it could have been a huge flop, as it sometimes happens with books that take on this particular subject. Fortunately, this wasn't the case AT ALL.
I found the plot extremely interesting and innovative. The characters were quite complex and very well portrayed, each and every one of them stirring in me some sort of emotion, be it fondness, annoyance, frustration and so on. With Aidan, for example, I loved him and I hated him all at the same time. It got to the point when, were he in front of me, I wouldn't have known whether to kiss him or strangle him. The same can be said about Tana, Gavriel and Midnight (though with her, I was more on the strangling side). Something that happens quite often with stand-alones is that there isn't really enough space or time for the author to properly present all the characters, but Holly Black did an awesome job of giving all her characters the love and respect they deserved, so that I felt like I truly knew each and every one of them by the time this beautiful journey was sadly over. Another thing I very much appreciated was how well-structured the plot was. I feel like nothing was left unresolved or unexplained, everything felt in order at the end and I felt...at peace with the way it all wrapped up.
I greatly enjoyed all the creepy quotes about death found at the beginning of each chapter. I felt like it ws quite original and fun and it made me truly believe that someone cared a huge deal about this book and put all the best efforts into it. I also found this style quite similar to Cassandra Clare's. I know they are friends, but I don't know exactly who published a book first? (I think it was Cassie but I'm not entirely sure). Anyway, my point is that they're both great at what they do and I'm sure it must be amazing to have a writer friend to share all sorts of brilliant ideas and techniques with.
Now, the thing I enjoyed the absolute most about this book is DIVERSITY. It seriously warmed my heart to see so many different types of people and relationships in one single book. There are - I think - representatives of all races and, definitely, of all sexualities. If writers have started including gay and lesbian characters in their books recently (which is already such a huge step forward), this is the first book that I read in which one can find not only homosexual, but also bisexual and transgender characters. I'm honestly SO freaking proud of Holly Black and I just want to give her a huge hug for being so brave and so fundamentally kickass.
*JUST ONE TEENY TINY SPOILER I'M SO SORRY* Can we please take this moment o appreciate how hot and badass that scene when Tana and Gavriel kissed was??? Like that tongue bite, though, you GO, girl. Had to be said, I absolutely loved that scene. *OKAY DONE*
I hope everyone enjoyed this review and I'll do my best to be back with another one as soon as possible. Until then, let me know what you think about the book in the comments!
Also, find me on Tumbr (JustMaddyBlog), Twitter (same) and Snapchat (meow-maddy) so we can all discuss books and music and other fun things together. <3
